Alex: Another road trip was when we went to the Hangar, and the Hangar guys are pretty burly, like no nonsense kinds of skaters. I mean they do have senses of humor, but when a bunch of out-of-town guys from up North come down to the Hangar and start doing really weird fucked up dorky shit, something is up. I remember when Tag was trying to do frontals over the hip and I think Rick and I had already finished skating. Rick had some funny like argyle sweater vest on, like really artsy looking guy, and we had bought flutes from South of the border, like little bamboo flutes. I remember Rick doing some gay, wimpy, art faggy dance like right on the hip, with a flute, like egging Tag on to do the frontal. Finally he did it as Rick had this pied piper call going on with the flute and it was like so insane. I was just wondering what the hell do these local, hangar dudes, think of these fucking freaky art faggy guys from up North and it was just the funniest thing. Just seeing that happen. There was always shit like that, like insider joke bullshit funny stuff that would always go on with Tag and Rick. They were always really fun to go on road trips with, just for that reason alone, always laughing and smiling the whole time because, it was so hysterically funny ... it was always, even like the first Skatopia. Before it was "Skatopia" when it was in West Virginia, Brewce Martin's King Dong Ramp, I remember going there and just having a great experience. Meeting Chris Collette for the first time and wondering what the hell is up with this guy and asking him how old he was... I would definitely like to do some kind of road trip where I go to California and ride all those pools 'cause I really haven't done that. I've gone to the Vans skateparks and things like that, but I was always on really tight time schedules so I didn't really do the whole ... is that the exit we want?
SK8TC: No we're going West. Alex: Oh okay, but anyway, at some point I realy want to do that before I get too old ... SK8TC: Speaking of time schedules, give the readers your whole educational background and status. Alex: Let's see, I guess my field is, being a contemporary art museum curator person. SK8TC: What is it about skateboarding that creates people like ... Alex: ... that's the thing about skating, that's sort of a false image, that skaters are sort of burned out freaks. They are definitely freaks, and they may definitely be burnt out, but there is a lot of creativity and brightness in the skate scene ... a lot of them are creative artistic individuals who have their own thing going on, either through skating or aside from skating. I consider having sort of a serious museum job as not being too removed from skating. Some of it feeds in to some of the shows I've been curating. |
