I got to know 37 a little more with each session on his ramp and each trip to Skatopia. He always shared something before we skated or hit the road: a painting he'd done, a song he'd written, a garden he'd been nurturing, a part he'd installed in his '59 Ford.

| He bounces from one project to the next the way he ollies from ramp to ramp, fully committed, following through with each sporadic jump of his mind. Few careers allow the freedom to be this well rounded. 37 is a music major at the University of Pittsburgh, financially suported by his time in the service and irregular carpentry and auto-mechanic jobs. He prides himself on not desiring a lot of consumer products, and thus not working for "the man." Friends of mine have gotten disgusted with 37 for his mooching, particularly because he ran out of gas money mid way through some road trips. However, what he fails to give from his wallet he more than makes up for from his heart and muscles. |

He bought a house last year and it is rugged and peculiar to say the least. 37 refuses to have a couch in his home, he has no tolerance for the fat and lazy. The bay window in front has been remodeled with a pagoda-style roof and a second wood stove has been added to the kitchen (for warmth). A car port is built on to the side of the house, complete with mechanic's pit and a 1947 Dodge. Off the back porch began the framing of a giant wooden bowl, 7 ft shallow end, and a roof to cover it.
37 was reluctant to take a break from construction and his studies to do an interview. Rain cancelled work one day so we sat down with his roommates and a pot of coffee, and went through a few questions... When did you decide you wanted a bowl in your backyard? First time I rode a bowl. |
