ZINE REVIEWS
BY STRAIGHT-SHOT MCGEE
It seems to me that anyone that follows through with the idea for a 'zine is definitely what you'd call "dedicated." I'm not saying that it makes any 'zine legit, but it does give you an appreciation for the ones that actually make an impression on you. With that said, let me share the latest round of jewels that arrived at TWS HQ courtesy of the anthrax-free U.S. Postal Service.

BALANCE
SECOND ISSUE IN PRINT
A bit of a surprise will welcome all of you who open this Philly-based 'zine expecting to see less-than-pro photos of people skating the ledges at Love Park. What you'll get is a full dose of tranny—East Coast style. I can only guess that this 'zine is inspired by the FDR skatepark, which many of you know as Phillyside—probably named as a tribute to its West Coast predecessor, Burnside. So as you can imagine, on a scale of glam to grit, this one weighs in on the gritty side. Get it by sending two dollars to Elfer Productions...[order it here]...and start planning that trip to Philly.

#46 - SK8TC
Everybody needs somebody to love, or to go hunting with or at least to skate with. The link below will take you to a site by some hardcore skaters in Philly, and I'd bet if you wrote to them, and drove to Philly they might skate with you. The site is not designed very well, but maybe they're learning or drunk or something. Good info though. Yo Vinny!

"Balance is a seriously kick-ass 'zine, super good for only being issue #2 (although these guys have been doing on-line stuff for a little while). It's got the right attitude and does the East Coast proud. Pools, art, road trips, reviews, and a sense of style is why this one floats to the top."

"A zine about skating from the perspective of that one thing you always seem to lose when skating. About a half second before you fall on your ass. Great photos of those who never seem to do that."

"On the zine front, I just received an issue of Balance, from back east. This is a killer zine dedicated to the nomadic skater and is printed in conjunction with a website (www.sk8tc.com). This one's a collection of stuff put out throughout the years, mostly concerning road trips (to: Tucson, Skatopia, Spain, the Southwest, and elsewhere) plus some Boston area coverage. With an attitude close to my heart (skate, travel, avoid BS and the law), naturally I'm gonna dig it."

"Balance has many things that all 'zines want to be: Editorial with no compromise, a staff of skaters that rip, connections galore and good coverage. I met Joey P. at a party in Jax Beach. Everybody was slamming a handle of Jim Beam. The last thing I remember, I was hiding under the host's bed because I had to pass out and I didn't want to get Magic Markered. Well they got me and almost everyone else in the house. The next morning, Joey was more marked than me. We went out for fish, grits and beer for breakfast at the pier. Joey's from up north, so I don't think he ate grits that day. I do know he shredded Frankie Vegas' pool after breakfast. Since then I have had the honor of skating with Joey again under different conditions. He still ripped and the zine he does is even better. This is what a zine should be."
