Part II We woke up early, packed the car, and hit the road at the same time Wags was leaving for work. It was amazing the hospitality we were shown by Cindy who was 6 months pregnant and Lindsay who was taking care of a 1 month old newborn. We rapped about this as we drove from Charleston to Wanchese. We had showers every day of this trip (if we wanted them) and ate like kings, what a difference from bathing in a Dairy Queen sink and sleeping in the rig at a rest stop. The "pregnant lady tour" it was, yessirree. But seriously, Wags and Suede definitely landed two of the good ones and the hospitality reminded us just what part of the country we were travelling through. There was a metal fullpipe visible from the road so we turned around to check it out. It was about 10-12ft tall and a good 20ft long but it had an old refrigerator and some other crap in it. Sitting behind a seafood restaurant, the trash was stinkin back there. The team voted to push on so we could make it to Wanchese in the daylight. Rob Nelson guided us in on the walkie-talkie. Of course it started raining as soon as we arrived but it cleared up quickly. Dirty and some other locals showed as we squeegeed and towelled the bowl. Tim Glomb, Bato, Zimmer, and Neil Wade from up North climbed the ladder followed shortly by Sizer. Full session! Tim was claiming drunkenness but he busted more moves than I've ever seen him do in person. It was nice to see he can skate as well as he destroys cars and builds bowls. Everyone was going for it. The mosquitoes started in for the kill as Rob brought us back to his crib where we cleaned up for some night life. Casa Nelson was the third family scene we stumbled into. Rob's kids, Olivia and Skyler, are old enough to talk and mess with us so that was a bonus. They were crackin us up. "Dad, I didn't like it when you were lighting my fireworks in the garage at 3 in the morning." This was after Russo blew his chances with a lady by stumbling when she led him across the bar, holding his hand. He probably had his worst slam of the trip getting towed by some girl's dog on her skateboard around the parking lot. I was having trouble communicating due to the hiccups and fell asleep on the beach. Powerful tasty local brew there in the Outer Banks. Luckily, Rob drove us home (right past Kitty Hawk). The next morning we had a fresh pot of coffee and a kill breakfast. We started sweating out the alcohol shooting driveway hill runs, riding an obscure 6-wheeled skateboard, and sessioning Rob's mini garage quarter-pipe. We went over to the Grindline YMCA park in Nags Head and the sun was shining but everyone was piling out of the park. Since the Y includes a large swimming pool, day camp, etc, every time a lifeguard hears thunder, they shut the whole place down for 30 minutes. We got a tour of a boatyard, a brewery, and rode the bowl instead. I'm happy. |

Good friends let us roll up in their house after 2am and crash while they were sleeping. We woke up early and sessioned two East Coast Round Wall spots before noon with a thick crew and a multi-car caravan. St. Mary's in Maryland with a bunch of new and old friends was a nice grand finale of sorts. It didn't stop there though because I had to bring the fellas home to Pittsburgh. I woke up on the deck of the Polish Hill bowl. We had some coffee, I got to hang out with 37's one-year-old, Elias, and then we did some skating. We even rounded up Ben Shannon for the rip rides. What a trip. What more can I say? Check out some more photos. |
